Le violon de Les Six

Synopsis

The Six were a group of six young composers based in Montparnasse, Paris, touted by music critic Henri Collet as France’s answer to the Russian ’Mighty Handful’ and given the soubriquet Les Six.

In two performances, Lee Shi Mei and Lim Yan present music for violin and piano by each of the six composers, including many lesser-known masterworks as well as the ubiquitous Violin Sonata by Francis Poulenc.

Three, Four, Five! - Esplanade Munch! Lunchtime concert series

A smorgasbord of delights for small string groups!

Touted as “the father of the classical symphony and string quartet”, Austrian composer Joseph Haydn established ground-breaking quartets, in which four players performed as equals. Since then, almost every great composer from Mozart to Shostakovich has written music in this form. There are however, many wonderful works for smaller and larger string groups, each with its own unique charm.

In this lunchtime concert, musicians from Resound Collective, Singapore's leading chamber music assembly, bring you a sumptuous selection of this music by Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Borodin.

Lim Yan & Lee Shi Mei present this programme of three sonatas which share a motivic connection.

Between 1798 and 1803, Beethoven wrote nine violin sonatas, but there was a hiatus of nine years before his final work in the genre; the contrast in style with the previous sonatas is stark, reflecting the evolution in Beethoven’s musical voice over that time. Schumann and Brahms, who can be considered to be Beethoven’s successors in the Germanic tradition, wrote their violin sonatas relatively late in their careers. YST Collaborative Piano faculty Lim Yan with long-time collaborator Lee Shi Mei present this programme of three sonatas which share a motivic connection (as alluded to in the programme title), which also appears in Brahms’ Three Intermezzi for piano solo.

Title: Much A-dur About Nothing - Lee Shi Mei and Lim Yan in Recital

Date: Saturday 6 April 2019

Time: 7.30pm

Korngold’s exquisite incidental music to Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing anticipates his later success as a film composer, from which four colourful character pieces make up the Suite for Violin and Piano.

Flanking this are two monumental pieces in A-Dur (A major) - Beethoven’s emotionally-charged “Kreutzer” Sonata, and the ever-popular Franck Sonata, written as a wedding gift for the violinist Eugene Ysaÿe who performed it for guests on his wedding day!

Join Singaporean musicians Lee Shi Mei and Lim Yan in this programme of dramatic and well-loved violin and piano music.

This recital is kindly supported by the National Arts Council and The Arts Fund.
